1. Speed downstream = (5+1) km/h = 6 km/h
:. Speed upstream = (5-1) km/h = 4 km/h
Then, (x/6)+(x/4)=1=>2x+3x=12
=> 5x=12=>x=2.4 km

2. [(x+(1/x)]2 = x2+(1/x2)+2=7+2=9=>x+(1/x)=3
:. [x+(1/x)]3=33=>x3+(1/x3)+3[(x+(1/x)]=27
=> x3=(1/x3)+3×3=27
=> x3+(1/x3)=27=9=18

3. Given, (a/b)=(5/7)
Now, (a/b)+[(a=b)/(b+a)]=(a/b)+[(1-a/b)/(1+a/b)]=(5/7)+[(1-5/7)/(1+(5/7))=(5/7)+[(7-5)/(7+5)]
=(5/7)+(2/12)=(5/7)+(1/6)=[(30+7)/42]=(37/42)
