Solution:

1). Total age of 4 brothers = 48 yr
Total age of 4 brothers and their mother = 17 × 5 = 85 yr
The age of mother = 85 – 48 = 37 yr

2). Total marks of 14 students = 14 × 71 = 994
New total marks of students = 994 – 42 – 74 + 56 + 32 = 966
New average of marks = 996 / 14 = 69

3). Fourth number
= (4 × 4 + 4 × 4 – 3 × 7)
= (16 + 16 – 21)
= (32 – 21) = 11

4). Sum of 4 new numbers = 50 × 104 – 100 × 44
= 5200 – 4400 = 800
Average = 800 / 4 = 200

5). Let the new observations be x, then
(x + 6 × 455) / 7 = 47
x + 273 = 47 × 7 = 329
x = 329 – 273 = 56

6). If the same distances are covered at different speeds of x km / h and y km / h, the average speed of the whole journey is given by
= (2xy) / (x + y) km / h
Required average speed = (2 × 6 × 3) / (6 + 3) = 36 / 9 = 4 km / h

7). Average weight of boys = x kg
Average weight increase after new boy = 2.5 kg
(x + 2.5) × 8 = x × 7 + 56
8x + 20 = 7x + 56
8x – 7x = 56 – 20
x = 36

8). Required average = (1 / 10) (2 + 4 + 6 + 8 + …. + 18 + 20)
= (2 / 10) (1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + …. + 9 + 10)
= (2 / 10) × [ (10 × 11) / 2 ] = 11

9). Let distance between station A and B be S km then
Average speed of car = Distance covered / total time
= { (S + S) km / [ (S / v) + (S / v2) ] } h
= 2S / { S [ (1 / v) + (1 / v2) ] }
= 2 / [ (v2 + v1) / (v1v2) ]
= 2 v1v2 / (v1 + v2)
